Right click over any slot to change the number of available slots; Sample Slot Border. The border to each sample slot shows the status of the materials in the editor thus: - White border means the sample slot is current ie the material can be.
Drag and drop images directly into material editor map slots (requires 3ds Max 2017 Update 1) Creative Market - Search thousands of high quality 3D assets. Object Paint 3D files by simple drag and drop into 3ds Max scene; 3ds Max file details available; Collection files (.3dsmal) are viewable and can be added via drag and drop inside the app. Setting up shaders in 3ds Max was fairly easy. Fo carpet I used simple color texture and bump map for other slots including V-Ray Displacement. I strongly suggest setting its Type to 2D mapping (landscape) as it will save you a lot of time for rendering calculations.

Having a way to compensate for the (stupid) 24 material limit in 3D Studio is always a big request, so here's a script to do just that.
RH Map Node Renamer
It takes the material assigned to the selected object and assigns the name of the object to it. Then it checks if there is a bitmap texture assigned to 'Diffuse', 'Specular Level', 'Opacity' and 'Bump'. If it finds a bitmap texture in the slot it renames the bitmap texture node to 'Color', 'Specular', 'Opacity', 'Normal'. Then it also renames the textures asigned using the pattern 'NameOfTheObject_NameOfSlot.*' ex. SmallBox_Color.bmp
